However, I feel that MacDonald is able to touch people through her universal theme of family dynamics. I would be lying if I said that I could relate to these characters and am completely honest in saying that I am happy about that. Were you able to relate to any of the characters? I suppose what struck me the most was that I was unable to predict their behaviours the way I usually can with other novels. The characters are deep and complex and while I didn’t like them all, (or really the majority of them, to be honest), I loved reading about their lives. I thought about this book between sittings and for months after reading it. Ann-Marie MacDonald, somehow, managed to write a novel that had me immediately addicted and unable to walk away. I’ve always considered myself to be a pretty slow reader, so imagine my horror at the thought of having to read this 566 page novel for a class – now imagine the feeling of utter accomplishment and pride when I finished reading it in 3 days! I can’t take all the credit of course.
